Healthy body, healthy mind?
Why movement, breathing and body awareness have a direct impact on stress, mood and mental stability.
„The first wealth is health“
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Body and mind do not function separately. Our nervous system is constantly monitoring whether we feel safe, tense or overwhelmed. These signals influence how we think, feel and act.
When stress arises, it is not just our mind that reacts. Our breathing changes, our heart rate increases and our muscles tense up. This makes sense when there is a real danger. In everyday life, however, this state often persists for longer than is good for us.
That is why the body can be an important gateway to inner regulation. Slow breathing, exercise, sleep, breaks and mindful body awareness help the nervous system to regain a sense of calm.
Hormones also play a role. Chronic stress can affect mood, energy levels, concentration and sleep. Exercise helps the body to relieve stress and regain a sense of stability.
In short
Mental health isn’t just about thinking. If you take your body seriously, you gain an additional way of managing stress, emotions and inner balance.
Would you like to better understand how stress affects you?
In psychological counselling, we look together at how thoughts, feelings, physical reactions and behaviour are interconnected.
